Habitat for Humanity Affordable Family Housing
Today, Rev. Susan and a group of parishiners met with Habitat for Humanity to walk the grounds of Saint Michael and All Angels. Troy Hendrickson, VP of Land Acquisition & Development, from Habitat for Humanity was present with a consultant colleague along with Rev Susan Pinkerton, Rev Barbara Stewart, Ann Logie, Gail Haghjoo, and Ali Haghjoo were present from the church
The team from Habitat understands our Bishop’s guidance that church land not be sold. Instead, a ground lease arrangement provides a portion of land to Habitat for building. This is similar to a project that Habitat is working on with St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Anaheim. That project is estimated to net around $75,000 annually for church ministries and operations.
Such projects typically take five years from start to completion. Habitat does all the work such as architectural designs, permits and coordinating with all governmental agencies as needed. They would also raise all the money and the labor of constructing the homes.
The concept is for two-story townhomes to be constructed and sold to moderate income families. The sale includes Deed restriction of Habitat having the first choice to buy if the residents should want to sell and move. If an initial agreement can be reached, Habitat for Humanity will next work on design proposals and then pursue getting funding and the required permits.
